The actress who was ‘Agony Aunt’
29th Apr 2000
By Tanuka Chakraverty

She was essentially a woman of the theatre with stray performances in films where she was more than noticed. Later she became an 'Agony Aunt' for the readers of 'Femina'
and put to rest several queries that tortured minds and souls of people across the country.

Pearl Padamsee may not be around but her vivacious spirit coupled with a rare infectious laughter has left an indelible print on our minds. She was a unique artist with almost a whacky sense of humor. 'Baaton-Baaton Mein' and 'Khatta Meetha' bear ample testimony to this.

Pearl began her career with English theatre and found it to be the art form she wanted to engage herself in. She realized that English was the language people wanted to speak and speak it better. She once told a reporter that peons were willing to work for her free in lieu of learning English from her.

For her, theatre took a place of pride when its medium was English, a language that sells. She also found Shakespearean plays of great relevance in today's context. 'Macbeth' for example, abounds with power-politics, which is a great parallel for the politics ridden Indian society.

More than theatre, Pearl became the sociologist with great concern for the changes that were taking place in the society, especially, amongst women. She was happy that women were discarding marriage. Never ever in favor of bondage of marriage, she always felt that managing a career and a house was taking its toll on women.

An actress, a director, and a social analyst, Pearl watched the similarities and differences between facts and fiction and studied human behavior simultaneously. But she never tried to experiment with theatre in bringing up these issues. ''They are sensitive. We need finer writers to tackle these issues. A lot of theatre we see today is frivolous'' she once remarked.

Finer writers are gradually coming in, sensitive issues are being handled (Feroze Khan's 'Saalgirah' talks about a couple and the complexities of their relationship) but Pearl aunt is not around to see and give her opinions. We will miss her.
