
Hi-tech IT institute for Karnataka soon Karnataka large and medium industry minister R V Deshpande said the state government had embarked on a plan to set up a high-tech Indian Institute Of Information Technology, here at a cost of Rs 50 crore in collaboration with leading IT companies. A decision to this effect was taken after discussions with the representatives of Infosys, Hewlett Packward, Microland, Microsoft, Citicorp and other firms yesterday. The government will provide 50 hectares of land, free of cost and a capital grant of Rs 5 crore each in 1998 and 1999 for the IIIT, which will start functioning from the next academic year, he added.

New Internet policy by Jan Union Telecommunications Secretary A V Gokak today said an internal committee of his ministry has finalised details of the new Internet policy, which would be announced by the first week of January.
Mr Gokak said the panel in its final draft had by and large incorporated a majority of recommendations made by the Jalan committee and the DoT will be well within its rights to announce the new policy in January.
He said though the DoT had submitted a set of recommendations to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Internet tariffs, the Trai has preferred to come out with an interim tariff regime, which would come into effect from January 15, he said.
