IBM PC beats fellow MNC brands
For the first time since the company kicked off operations in the country, Tata Information Systems Ltd (TISL), IBM's Indian marketing arm, has outsold Compaq, the world's largest PC manufacturer, in the PC business. Compaq's continued dominance of the top slot in PC sales among international brands, ever since it pulled its act together in India, has been wrested out, even though for just a quarter (Q3 '96).According to Sanjiv Mittal, the vice president who heads the personal systems division of TISL, the company would have sold about 20,000 units of PCs (preliminary estimates) by the end of December 1996, representing a 60 percent growth over the previous year (which was 11,059). Even more significant is the fact that TISL has finally managed to increase its market share in the third quarter, side lining Compaq. TISL's team is striving to sustain the lead they have achieved.
