C-DAC set to cross another milestone

The first Param - 10000, a high performance giga-flop range supercomputer which will be the latest to join the arsenal of Pune-based Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), will be delivered to a Singapore university early next year.

C-DAC Executive Director Dr Vijay P Bhatkar said here today that this would be the fastest supercomputer in Asia apart from a Japanese machine. The new series of supercomputers with open frame architecture (OFA) can perform 100 giga flops (floating point operations per second) and could be upgraded to terra flops range (1000 giga flops).

Three orders are in the pipeline, one each from the National Informatics Centre (NIC), Pune, the Institute for Computer Aided Design of Russia and the Singapore University.

The Param - 10000 is the latest in the range. Besides, C-DAC has also developed a language technology known as Graphics and Intelligence based Script Technology (GIST) to eliminate language barrier in computer usage.

With Param - 10000 having such high magnitude of operations per second, it can be used for weather forecasting by analysing oceanic and atmospheric data, freak weather conditions, discovering of oil, rocket launching stimulation, studies pertaining to nuclear reactors safety and other applications.
