East meets West

September 10th to 21st saw a meeting of two cultures in one of the most popular art forms known to man through the ages. CARTOONS. Held at the Venkatappa Art Gallery the exhibition featured the illustrious(pun intended) Ponappa and the equally well known Rainer Hachfeld.

Those who might be well acquainted with Ponappa's cartoons might be interested in his surprisingly varied and righ background. Born in Mangalore, he was educated in Mangalore, Pune, and Madras , graduating from the Madras School of Architecture. He went abroad for higher studies and dropped out. He went on to work as an architect at Madras, Delhi and Lagos and then settled down in Bangalore to pursue his career as a freelance cartoonist. His works are a regular part of the Times Of India, The Economic Times and the Mid-day in Bombay.

Rainer Hachfeld on the other hand seemed to have set his sights on cartooning from the very start. He studied the making of cartoon films, stage settings and painting in Berlin, his first drawings appearing in print in 1965. He also is the author of 8 children plays, while his Gaggarayana Friendsu was staged in India. he won the first prize for his caricatures in Russia and South America and today lives in Berlin as a freelance caricaturist, journalist and an author.
