Art Galleries galore

The art bazaar of Bangalore is surely emerging out of its slumber, and is making its presence felt in the national art melas. There was a time when Bangalore known for its laid back attitude wouldn't venture out beyond the traditional Mysore and Tanjore school of painting. "South Indian art is restricted to Mysore and Tanjore paintings" moaned Crimson Art Gallery owner Silloo Daruwalla who has migrated to Bangalore from Mumbai. But that is no longer true.

Many bright young artists are making their presence felt and painting the city with vibrant hues. The increasing number of art galleries is a testimony to this. Not long ago there was only one art gallery in Bangalore, the city's Louvre: Venkatappa Art Gallery. Today there at least a dozen. Although this is peanuts compared to the 164 galleries in Delhi, Bangalore is certainly making a valient effort in the right direction. The highly successful Artist Camp held by the city's renowned art organisation Karnataka Chitrkala Parishath is point in case. Artists from all over the country participated and made the city proud.
