North Karnataka
A Picturesque Tour
North Karnataka, with a majestic beauty of its own boasts of two places well worth a visit. Still free from the rashes of tourism, one can experience sounds of silence, the pristine glory of nature and an indigenous culture untouched by contemporary changes.
Aihole, 483 kms from Bangalore, is a picturesque village nestled on the banks of the Mahaprabha river. One of the earliest capitals of the Chalukyas, this idyllic land is also known as the cradle of Indian architecture as it houses some of the most beautiful temples in the country. Worth a look are the 5th century Lad Khan temple and the Durga temple with its semi-circular apse and interior carvings.
The capital of the early Chalukyas, Badami (also known as Vatapi), is situated at the mouth of a ravine between two rocky hills.
Rock cut cave temples, gateways, forts, inscriptions and sculptures seem to come alive under your eyes.

Overlooking the caves is a reservoir dotted with temples dedicated to Vishnu and Shiva. The largest and most ornamental is the third cave temple dedicated to Vishnu.
