The way we were

Old Landmarks

Elgin Flour Mill, one of the most elegant and oldest buildings, constructed in 1932, bowed in pressure to changing times. The red brick structure, with wrought iron gates and lights on the piers, with two pine trees in the background was more than a pretty picture. God knows how many loaves of bread were baked from the flour ground in Elgin mills. This piece of lifestyle set in red brick finally fell to the demolishing machines in 1995.

Next in line facing the same fate of being raised through the ground is the Cash Pharmacy building at the junction of Residency Road and St. Marks Road.

This ninety year old structure houses the oldest medical shop in the city. Its Gothic architecture along with its high gables and monkey tops, its pretty dome had an old world charm.Buildings if maintained regularly probably can be saved from the horror of demolition, but that I guess is a bit too alien for the Indian psyche.Other buildings anticipating demolition are Bowring Institute, and the EGK building on MG Road.
