Koottu

(For 4-5 persons)
Preparation time: 45 minutes

Ingredients:
1/2 cup             channa dal
1                   carrot
1                   onion
1                   potato
100 gm              cauliflower
2 tbsp              fresh coconut (ground)
walnut size         jaggery
1/2 cup             shelled peas
walnut size         tamarind
1 tsp               cumin seeds
1 tsp               mustard seeds
4-5                 whole red chillies
1/2 tsp             red chilli powder
1 tsp               salt
some curry leaves
2 tbsp oil
a pinch of hing
1/4 tsp             turmeric powder
Method: Boil the dal and mash it slightly. Cut all the vegetables into small pieces and boil.

Heat oil. Put hing, curry leaves, jeera, mustard and whole red chillies. After the mustard crackles put the dal and vegetables. Add jaggery, tamarind juice and one cup of water. Add salt, red chilli powder and tamarind.

Cook for another 5 minutes on low heat. Add coconut and mix well. Serve with parathas or puris.
